This is an ongoing weekly workshop series (via Zoom) currently exploring the Laghu Yogavāsiṣṭha, poet Abhinanda's abridged version of the larger Yogavāsiṣṭha. A popular classic of Advaita Vedānta philosophy, the Laghu Yogavāsiṣṭha is a beautiful poem in the form of a dialogue between Sage Vasiṣṭha and Śrī Rāma and tackles the problem of human suffering, life and death, including the way forward in turbulent times.

Join Professor Deven Patel for one or more delightful sessions. Teacher and students will collectively work on translating the verses and discuss their meaning. These classes can be taken as a series of 5 sessions at a time (recommended) or as single sessions.

To understand any language, some knowledge of grammar is needed. Sanskrit is no exception. The knowledge of vibhakti (case endings) for nouns, verbal forms and some infinitives is necessary. Verses have a metrical form, and the poetry gets transformed into prose. Only then can the verse be understood properly.

Sanskrit: A Tool for Meditation – Shanta Bulkin
How does studying Sanskrit grammar, chanting various mantras, shlokas, verses, etc., make a connection to the anāhata nādam, the "unstruck sound"? How does meditation take the practitioner beyond the body and mind? Guruji often said, "Sanskrit has the power to rewire the brain." Simple but powerful exercises will be introduced to facilitate these neurological connections.

What then of the upasarga, or preverb, that is used in conjunction with a verbal root? Using simple verses, an exploration of some of the syntactic and semantic considerations that relate to the use of upasargas, and how they aid in bringing about sentential meaning, will be presented.

Studying the Effects of Sanskrit Learning on the Brain with Ken Pugh and Indira & Shanta Bulkin *

Fri, Jun 28 to Sun, Jun 30

Researchers from the Haskins Labs group at Yale University, working with members of the Ananda Ashram community to create a new East-West Science Initiative, will be collaborating with the East~West Sanskrit Institute based in San Francisco, CA. The purpose of this Intensive Weekend is to study the effects of Sanskrit learning on brain activity and cognitive function.

Selected participants will wear EEG caps specifically wired to the parts of the brain responsible for speech and writing. Subjects will chant the Sanskrit alphabet, verses and sutras -- along with the audience -- and will write devanāgarī letters to explore the changes in the brain's responses.

Please join researchers for an enjoyable scientific exploration!
Included will be lectures by neurologist Dr. Sarah Mulukutla who is also a meditation instructor.

This event, hosted by the School of Sanskrit at Ananda Ashram, will also be streamed online.
